When Intelligence Becomes Abundant, Human Capacities Become More Valuable


For the last hundred years, we have sent children to school to acquire intelligence.

But what happens to education when intelligence is no longer scarce?

What happens when answers, analysis, coding, design, and content are available instantly, at little or no cost, from a device in every pocket?

We are entering a world in which many of the outputs traditionally associated with intelligence are becoming abundant.

This raises a more important question:

When intelligence becomes abundant, what becomes valuable?

The answer is paradoxical, yet increasingly clear:

When intelligence becomes abundant, genuinely human capacities become more valuable—not less.

Knowledge Is No Longer Enough

For generations, education was organized around the scarcity of information.

Teachers possessed knowledge that students needed. Schools provided access to books, experts, methods, and qualifications. Success often depended on remembering information and producing correct answers.

That model is changing.

Artificial intelligence can already explain complex topics, summarize books, solve problems, generate ideas, and provide personalized support. Its capabilities will continue to expand.

This does not mean that knowledge is irrelevant. Children still need strong foundations in language, mathematics, science, history, and culture.

But simply possessing information will no longer distinguish a person.

When answers are abundant, the person who knows how to ask the right questions becomes invaluable.

The more easily answers can be generated, the more important it becomes to understand:

  • which questions are worth asking;

  • whether an answer is trustworthy;

  • how a decision affects other people;

  • when efficiency should give way to care;

  • how to act when there is no perfect answer;

  • what deserves our attention;

  • what kind of life we want to create.

These are not merely technical skills.

They are human capacities.

Attention Will Become a Form of Wealth

In an environment filled with endless information, entertainment, notifications, and artificial stimulation, the ability to pay attention becomes increasingly rare—and therefore increasingly valuable.

Attention allows a child to observe an insect, listen to a friend, follow a difficult idea, recognize an emotion, or remain engaged when something is not immediately exciting.

It is the foundation of learning, creativity, empathy, and meaningful relationships.

Yet attention cannot be developed through constant stimulation. It also grows through silence, boredom, patience, repetition, and direct experience.

A child sitting beside a river may initially say that nothing is happening.

After several minutes, the child begins to notice the current, the reflections, the insects, the sounds, and the movement of leaves.

The world did not suddenly become more interesting.

The child’s attention became deeper.

In the age of artificial intelligence, the ability to truly pay attention may become one of the greatest competitive advantages.

Discernment Matters More Than Access

When information was scarce, the challenge was finding it.

When information is abundant, the challenge is evaluating it.

Children will need to distinguish between what is convincing and what is true. They will need to recognize manipulation, bias, exaggeration, and false certainty. They will need to compare sources, understand context, and remain willing to revise their beliefs.

This is discernment.

Discernment is more than critical thinking as an academic exercise. It requires judgment, humility, self-awareness, and ethical responsibility.

A person may have access to extraordinary intelligence and still make destructive decisions.

Intelligence can help us achieve a goal.

It cannot decide whether that goal is wise.

The future requires young people who can ask not only, “Can this be done?” but also:

  • Should it be done?

  • Who benefits?

  • Who may be harmed?

  • What are the long-term consequences?

Emotional Regulation Becomes Essential

Advanced technology does not remove uncertainty, disappointment, conflict, fear, or loneliness.

A child may have access to instant answers and still feel excluded by friends. An adult may use powerful tools and still struggle with anxiety, anger, resentment, or isolation.

Technology can support emotional development.

It cannot complete that development on our behalf.

Children still need to learn how to recognize what they feel, communicate their needs, tolerate frustration, recover from setbacks, and respond without causing harm.

These capacities are often developed through ordinary, real-life experiences:

  • waiting for a turn;

  • resolving a disagreement;

  • adapting when a plan changes;

  • completing a difficult task;

  • asking for help;

  • apologizing;

  • trying again after failure.

A world of instant results may make these experiences feel inconvenient.

Yet they are precisely the experiences through which resilience and emotional maturity grow.

Relationships Cannot Be Automated

Artificial intelligence may become increasingly conversational, supportive, and personalized. It may help people reflect, learn, organize, and communicate.

But children still need human relationships.

They need to be seen by adults who know them.

They need friends who sometimes misunderstand them.

They need communities in which their actions affect other people.

They need to experience trust, conflict, repair, cooperation, and belonging.

Relationships are not valuable because they are perfectly efficient.

They are valuable because they require presence, vulnerability, responsibility, and care.

A machine may generate a compassionate sentence.

Human compassion involves noticing another person, choosing to respond, and sometimes changing our own behavior for that person’s well-being.

That difference matters.

Embodied Experience Becomes More Important

The more time people spend interacting with digital systems, the more important it becomes to remain connected to the body and the physical world.

Children need to climb, build, carry, balance, dig, swim, draw, cook, plant, explore, and rest.

They need to understand risk through experience rather than only through warnings. They need to feel tired after meaningful effort. They need to discover what their bodies can do.

Embodied learning creates forms of understanding that cannot be reduced to information.

A child can read about cooperation, but building a shelter with a group teaches something different.

A child can watch a video about a forest, but walking beneath trees, feeling the humidity, hearing birds, and noticing decomposing leaves creates a deeper relationship with the ecosystem.

The Intelligence Age should not move children further away from the living world.

It should help us recognize how irreplaceable that world is.

Creativity Is More Than Producing Content

Artificial intelligence can generate images, stories, music, videos, and ideas.

This may appear to reduce the value of human creativity.

In reality, it changes what creativity means.

Creativity is not only the production of an artifact.

It is also the process of noticing, imagining, experimenting, expressing, and making meaning.

A child’s drawing still matters when a machine can produce a more polished image.

Its value lies in the child deciding what to represent, making choices, confronting difficulty, discovering a personal style, and expressing something rooted in lived experience.

Human creativity is connected to identity.

The question will no longer be only:

Who can produce the most impressive result?

It will increasingly become:

Who has something meaningful to express?

Agency May Become the Defining Capacity

Powerful technology can help people act on ideas faster than ever before.

This creates enormous potential—but only for those who develop agency.

Agency is the ability to make choices, initiate action, accept responsibility, and influence one’s surroundings.

Children develop agency when they are trusted with meaningful decisions. They develop it when they participate in real projects, solve authentic problems, and see that their contribution matters.

They do not develop agency when every difficulty is removed, every activity is prescribed, and every solution is delivered immediately.

In a world where artificial intelligence can complete many tasks for us, education must ensure that children do not become passive consumers of machine-generated possibilities.

They must learn to direct technology rather than simply follow it.

Nature Offers Something Technology Cannot Replace

Nature is not merely a setting for recreation.

It is a complex, living classroom.

Natural environments are unpredictable. They require observation and adaptation. They contain beauty, discomfort, risk, interdependence, and consequences.

A trail may become muddy.

The weather may change.

A plant may grow slowly.

An animal may remain hidden.

A group may need to adjust its plan.

These experiences develop patience, awareness, cooperation, and respect for realities that do not respond instantly to human demand.

Nature also reminds us that intelligence is not limited to computation.

Living systems adapt, communicate, regenerate, compete, cooperate, and evolve. They reveal forms of intelligence embedded in relationships and ecosystems.

As artificial intelligence advances, ecological intelligence must advance with it.

The Role of Education Is Changing

The central purpose of education can no longer be limited to transferring information.

Education must help children learn how to live wisely with powerful tools.

This means shifting from the transfer of information toward the cultivation of humanity:

  • attention in a distracted world;

  • discernment in an age of generated information;

  • emotional regulation during rapid change;

  • creativity beyond automated production;

  • agency in the presence of convenient assistance;

  • cooperation in increasingly complex societies;

  • ecological responsibility on a finite planet;

  • wisdom in a world of abundant intelligence.

The educational challenge of the coming decades is not to compete with machines at being machines.

It is to help children become deeply, courageously, and responsibly human.

That is not a retreat from the future.

It is how we prepare for it.

We are not preparing children to compete with machines.

We are preparing them to live wisely alongside powerful technologies while remaining deeply connected to themselves, to other people, and to the living world.
